Interviews ... Global Jobs Scholarships week ending 04 February 2018
Yep the first month of the year is ending but tomorrow is still a whole new world so make it count. Although it seems like a lifetime ago, over the holidays I was in transit. Not figuratively, I was literally hopping between cities and continents. Spent the final 2 weeks leading into this month on what I believe was a family vacation although my wife and hosts dubbed it a studycation as I was leisurely (at least to me) completing some online training replete with multiple certification exams. It is not unusual during the cross over night service to hear, “this year levels must change O”.
A few ways career ‘levels’ can ‘change’ is if you renegotiate your contract, change roles and/or change jobs. The last 2 involve interviewing as a rite of passage. For those with interviews in the new year, a point always comes when the interviewer(s) say, “do you have any questions?”. This is always an opportunity to show interest in your potentially new company but quite a few people fluff it. As part of my studycation (apologies the word is growing on me), I came across McKinsey’s 7S’ Model which suggests that you can identify a company by 7S namely (1) Strategy (2) Structure (3) Systems (4) Skills (5) Staff (6) Style and (7) Shared Values.
There will always be unexpected questions and some not so unexpected but it occurred to me that with a little prior research this could help in the all important final parting question. If any of the S’s has not already come up in the interview then you can ask, “What is the strategy of the company moving forward? I understand that you want to break into this new market but what is the strategy and how can I help?”. Or you could say, “What is the present team structure and how will my skills contribute to making the team/department/function better?”.
Regardless of whether you are looking to change or remain the same I am pushing this post through while it is yet January just to say “cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right!”.
Hope your year is already off to a splendid start, have a great week and if you have an interview coming up you have my permission to knock the ball out of the park.
