Flooding ... Global Jobs and Scholarships for week ending 10 September 2017

It is not a joke. As far as 2017 goes we are truly on the last lap. Where has the year gone? I cannot answer that any more than the next person. What I can say though is that Hurricane Harvey in America but also other instances of epic floods from Freetown in Sierra Leone to Makurdi in Nigeria, Mumbai in India and across parts of Bangladesh and Nepal has brought climate change to the fore. The New York Times reports that tens of millions of people have been affected by months of flooding and mudslides and more than 1000 people have died. We can no longer duck the climate change debate or can we? More importantly my thoughts, heart and prayers are with everyone who has lost life, limb or loved one.

Nope I am not in a pessimistic mood. In fact I had a short holiday last week. Not that anyone noticed but that is officially why that week’s post was missing! Sometimes nothing is a great thing to do and in some situations an excellent thing to say. Having overcome a life threatening affliction early 2017 on top of family vicissitudes in 2016, let us just say this trip was welcome. We were with family in 2 different cities and it was a delight seeing my 3 month old son, super excited around other children. Perhaps he is trying to send a clear message to daddy and mummy for more siblings but as they say in Nigeria, the fear of school fees is the beginning of wisdom.

The word ‘life’ is a noun but ‘living’ (or doing life) is a verb. Similarly ‘career’ is a noun but it connotes the verb progress. What that means is that like a pilot in flight, ship in pilotage or a satellite in orbit there is a need to constantly calibrate one’s position, course and speed to gauge progress. This helps when you have to pick up the pieces whether from natural or man-made catastrophes. As they say in Cambodia, when the tide is high the fish eat the ants but when the reverse happens the ants eat the fish. The decisions we make particularly in regards to education and experience will determine where we end up. My role is simply to present some opportunities to enhance the quality of your choice.
