I am Happy....International Scholarships and Engineering Jobs for Week ending 22 June 2014
"Excuse me sir. Excuse me sir" said the little boy in the men's toilet at the Chinese Buffet in Wood Green, North London. I froze as if unsure that the young child could be talking to me and slowly looked around the toilet to be sure that there was no one else. It had to be me then!
This was Saturday, one day before Father's Day and two days before the Nigerian football team jokingly named 'Super Eagles' refused to fly let alone be super. I mean this is London. Kids are not allowed to use the toilets by themselves so I wondered if he wanted his adult minder or parent or guardian, "Sorry are you speaking to me" still unsure I asked.
"Yes sir".
Now any man will tell you that there are three unspoke rules in the men's lavatory:
(A) do not look at anyone.
(B) do not talk to anyone and
(C) definitely do not touch anyone.
Somehow this 4 or 5 year old boy had broken the first two and I could not trust him on the third. Stepping back I said, "what did you want to say son"?
The "son" came out with a drawl like I was African American rather than just Nigerian-Surinamese.
He replied, "Excuse me sir, I just wanted to say, 'I am happy'".
Huh? I could not stop the smile coming to my face. "You are what? And why are you happy" I asked.
"Here. Because of here".
"Is this your first time using the toilet? What do you mean by here?"
"I mean here this place".
Ahhh not communicating with people generally and impatience are two of my many sins. Moreover I thought that I had spent too much time talking to the kid and did not want someone to walk in and think wrongly. I asked his name and walked out of the toilet quickly but waited outside to be sure it was not my mind playing games on me. Soon enough his dad came to wait by the door outside, peeped in to the toilet and called his name to be sure he was doing well. On cue I started a conversation with his dad to know why his son was so happy and he said, "It is the chocolate fountain. I seldom have the time or resources to take the family out but today I decided to treat my 'young one', my other son and their mum to this Chinese buffet restaurant and he has been ecstatic ever since".
Well people are happy for different reasons. I get happy when I can pull or push other people on to the same social mobility ladder I am climbing. Good education is expensive. A rich scholarship is the key! So here we go... and do not forget to be happy even when your national team is in omnishambles.
