The Death of Citizen Clifford Orji, Article by Segun Adeniyi

Image
A Nigerian died in detention after 13 years without trial. It is a shame when a country that prides itself as the giant of Africa is unable to efficiently regulate its own society. When a man is presumed guilty without trial and where people go there way oblivious of the needs of their fellow men. It is only in the jungle where everyone blames everyone else for the short comings of society. What if it wasn’t Orji? What if it were someone who got locked up for trivial non-punishable stuffs like insulting the village’s ‘big man’?” Against the background that the primary function of government is to guarantee its citizens the most fundamental natural right, which is the right to life, it is a classic Nigerian tragedy that a man who was considered mad by the Police (which makes him not responsible for his actions) was practically subjected to jungle justice until he died. Our guest writer does this justice. The Verdict according to Olusegun Adeniyi. Email, olusegun.adeniyi@thisdayl...

In Defence of PDP by Akin Osuntokun

Image
As an aspiring intellectual you can always understand why i am fascinated with diligent conversation and bespoke analogy. It is also why i draw attention to brilliant articles that discuss the solutions to Nigeria's many problems and not just irrelevant grumbling. The future belongs to those who do, not those who moan and complain but those who take 5 loaves and feed 5 thousand. Those who turn their talent to results. Here is Akin Osuntokun already establishing himself as the PDP strategist-in-residence trying defend the indefensible. In my opinion he does. What about yours? By Akin Osuntokun It is not fashionable to hold brief for the Peoples Democratic People (PDP). It is a vocation that is guaranteed a hostile reception by a phalanx of active Nigeria public intelligentsia complemented by the impression  that the party itself believes it does not need anybody’s advocacy or does not deserve it or both. It is seemingly perpetually torn between two cont...

Beware of Facebook

Concluding excerpts from the story that has gripped the attention of a nation.   *** Cynthia Udoka Osokogu Was Killed By Her Facebook Friends In Lagos *** 24 Year Old Cynthia Osokogu left Abuja in late July 2012 (According to reports, on the 22nd of July 2012). Like many promising young Nigerians, she combined academic pursuits with commercial enterprise. The post-graduate student of Nasarawa State University was a clothing retailer and had travelled to Lagos to purchase new stock. Cynthia had been chatting with some new “friends” on Facebook for a few months. In the course of their conversations, they developed a friendship and a level of trust. These young men were also university students, they seemed normal and promised to host Cynthia when she came to Lagos. There is speculation that they paid for her plane ticket and promised to pay for her hotel as well. Only Cynthia knows if this is true. Whatever the truth is, Cynthia trusted her new friends an...

The Olympics and Britain's rebirth

Image
Guest writer. As Great Britain hosted the world and the world continues to celebrate her, I should first observe that broadly speaking Nigerians have a love-hate relationship with the British people. I think this is because in spite of centuries of chequered association from slave trade through colonial to sovereign relationship, and notwithstanding contacts in the areas of education and commerce, the two peoples know little about each other. As a result, they resort to stereotypes created largely by the media and second-hand perception. I have been a close observer of British society since I came to live and work in the UK some 27 years ago, initially as the Regional Editor for Europe and North America for The Guardian newspaper. Over that period, I have come to know a bit more than the Nigerian who is in the UK as a tourist or a student. My first observation on the typical British person is that he is an amusing and sometimes eccentric characte...
