On 29 May 2012 Nigeria celebrated 'Democracy Day' to mark the date in 1999 when power was transferred from a military regime to a civilian democracy. Harnessing technology for a pot of soup

This is a true story. As a child, along with my younger brother and sister, we refused to eat our own mothers pot of soup. Yes! We returned from Command Children's School, An's Barrack, Yaba, tired and very hungry. Yet we took one look at the freshly prepared "Eba and vegetable soup" and declined to eat. Before you draw the wrong conclusions permit me to say it was not that my mother was a terrible cook (she is a great cook in fact) nor was it because we were spoilt brats. It was not because we were still getting accustomed to Nigerian culinary delights after the preceding 5 years in England. The truth was that there was kerosene (otherwise known as Jet-A1 fuel) in her soup. It was so thick you could smell it. How did kerosene  get in to the vegetable soup? Hello everyone, I am pleased with the number of people from developing countries and America that are seizing the educational opportunities provided by my weekly blog. In between jobs as a consultant and frenetic work to conclude my PhD research you can say that time is my scarcest resource. So why do I keep posting the opportunities out? The answer is quite simple really. Everyone in life deserves a leg up the success ladder. For people like me from not-so-rich backgrounds, education is one guarantee of upward social mobility. Moreover it makes sense to link hardworking people with big dreams but no resources to high calibre universities with large resources but no determined students. You can say it is a match made in heaven. Both those on the left and right agree that education is a right not a privilege.
