Let there be light and there was! In the eons since then mankind has moved from the sole natural light source (the sun) to artificial ones and hybrids in between. Although Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison aka “The Wizard of Menlo” park are credited with inventing the electric light bulb, historians identified a list of 22 prior inventors of incandescent lamps. They concluded that Edison’s version outstripped the others because he developed the entire integrated system of electric lighting. His consisted of an effective incandescent material, a higher vacuum than others (using the Sprengel pump) and a high resistance that made power distribution from a central source viable. Nevertheless, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are gradually putting electric bulbs in the shade . LEDs have long operational lifetime, compact form factor, easier maintenance, lower cost and high energy efficiency (greater than 100 lm/W).
