Hello everyone This year there has been much talk of the swinging global trends. What does that mean for you though? I mean when the global elite gathered in Davos 3 weeks ago, they talked about "inclusive growth", the need for increasing job creation and how technology is set to wipe out several middle class jobs. In essence the jobs/careers/companies you are hoping to do/start/work after you graduate may not be there when  you are ready! Last week, the British elite gathered for the annual Dimbleby lecture. It was given by Christine Lagarde, current managing director of the IMF, who talked about future global trends in light of past international experiences. As if reinforcing the trend from Davos she observed we are in the middle of another revolution similar to that seen 100 years ago in 1914. Mind you this was right before two world wars. She projected that as economic power moves from east to west and north to south, within 20 years Nigeria would be more populous...

Hello everyone Stop blinking and quit what you are thinking. It is true. "Yesterday is gone" sang the Beatles but so is January 2014. A friend called me yesterday and said, "I wonder where the year is rushing to?". Well as far as we are alive seasons will come and go. This is the 5th installment of my weekly blog.We must begin to act now if we want to take our destiny in our hands. Some people prefer to wait and wait and wait. They keep waiting endlessly for something to happen or someone to give them a leg up. "Waiting in perpetuity" is what I call it. Truth is we must know then create our own paths. Whether you belong to a developed or developing nation, and mind you I have seen both sides the onus is on you to do what you can with what you can. Now. Very many people see the scholarship opportunities and do not apply. They think they are not qualified enough or connected enough. They assume it is for someone else. The lucky few. When will you wake...

Davos and Us... Academic Scholarships and Engineering Job Opportunities for the week ending 31 January 2014

Hello there Today we enter the last week of January. The clock keeps ticking while some of us keep wishing rather than doing. Last week the Global elite went for the annual talking shop and photo opportunity that the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland has become. From the litany of news report and indepth analysis what seemed most worrisome to me was the battle between man and machine. This is not another sequel of the Terminator franchise. The fact is that the disruptive ability of Information Technology is being keenly felt in many middle class jobs. Like I observed last week a plethora of mid-level jobs are being taken over by computers. This means that those jobs that you intended to do at the beginning of your undergraduate degree may no longer be there when you graduate. The trend is only set to accelerate. Therefore entire career paths will be swept away by the tsunami of technological innovation. Your only bulwark is to be as prepared as you can be. In all you do...

Midweek Essay: Nigeria in 100 Years

Nigeria: The Next 100 Years Author: Eddie Iroh Series: Eddieiro’s INTERVENTION  Contact:  eddie.iroh@thisdaylive.com I  have a strong feeling that in spite of all the planning that went  into the centenary, the event still caught Nigerians at crossroads. They did not know precisely how to receive it. Is it a celebration, a commemoration, a rejection, a reaffirmation, or a distraction? Would it be appropriate to hail it in the same manner we celebrate October 1 (“Happy Independence!”)? Happy Amalgamation does not exactly roll off the tongue, does it? And really would it be wise to shout Happy Centenary! for a colonial concoction that was forced down the people’s throat more for the convenience of administering the colony than the long-term good of the people? Indeed is it not true that some of ...
