Best strategy to defeat terror in Northern Nigeria

Image
It is good that the situation in Northern Nigeria is attracting concerned voices. Someone observed that the culture of impunity predates Boko Haram and has been unchecked and undeterred for the past few decades. I believe that nothing happens out of nothing and as an hausa proverb says, "if fire is burning down your neighbours house and you keep silent, becareful because your house is next!". Since we are all agreed on the dire political, economic and infrastructural ramifications of sustained destruction, the question is not how bad is bad but how good can become better. What is the best strategy to defeat terror and extremism, especially the kind professed by Boko Haram? I have always believed in a mixture of approaches. Mix-and-match strategies are notoriously difficult to implement and harder to monitor but sequencing and phasing is an important instrument for victory. Some call this multi-faced approach to peace or plain old multi-tasking to some. The guest writer -Mr...

Northern Nigeria. From crisis to deceased.

Image
I have long wondered if anyone understands the full import of the ceaseless crisis in parts of Northern Nigeria. The thousands of people that have lost their lives to Boko Haram and Ansaru terrorist groups are not the only victims. No. The tonnes of infrastructure burnt, damaged and destroyed are not the only capital losses. No. The present challenges are only a precursor to even greater damage. Why? When you kill the young or destroy infrastructure you essentially put a bullet in the head of your future. It is easier to destroy a thing than to build it. The man dies in all those who keep silent in the face of tyranny and oppression so all those who keep silent when a brother or sister joins a terrorist group become their own undertakers. The economic dastardisation is even worse. What we are witnessing is a gradual extinction in the economy of the north. The economy is being set back by decades while the south continues to roll up its sleeves and progress. This would be sad if it w...

Miracles and marriage. The Benny Hinn Example

Image
In 2011 when i first heard the news of the breakdown of pastor Benny Hinn's marriage and subsequent divorce i was overwhelmed. Not because i thought he was anything but human. Nor was it because i felt his wife being the daughter of a pastor was perfect but because of the circumstances of Benny Hinn's marriage which he dutifully spoke about in his seminal classic, " Good Morning Holy Spirit ". In the book he talks about how God led him to meet his wife. On hearing that there marriage collapsed after 30 years i was heart broken. Could God have made a mistake? What could have gone wrong? As a ministry partner i received information as the story progressed and Benny dutifully acknowledged that he erred in his marriage but it was NEVER infidelity. Which is a problem i will have to square up to when i do decide to sign that dotted register. Marriage is under attack as never before. And sadly, many Christian leaders who should be leading the way not only aren’t s...

Engineering and academic scholarships and positions for the week starting 10 March 2013

Image
It has been ages since i put up a post with engineering and academic scholarships and job opportunities. Why? Since deactivating my Facebook account on the 1 February for 90 days to focus on my diverse job description i felt that it would be difficult to reach our usual customer base.   Well this weekend i was thinking that you dont have to help a flood of people. Sometimes it is just that one person that it will make all the difference. So?   From now on your favourite job and academic openings will be splashed across this page every week regardless of the number of people tuning in. This is not C-Span but you all get my drift though.   The founders of this blog had a simple desire based on their experience. To channel opportunities to those who need them. This creed is the same whether we have 100 or 100,000 visitors so?   Take it away!   Have a great week guys.   Faculty Positions in the area of Engineering, Management and Archit...

Politics, power and personality. An abuse!

The Politics of a Certificate The Verdict By Olusegun Adeniyi. Sometime in 2002, I was in my office as editor of the Sunday edition of THISDAY when some officials of the Abia State Government walked in with a photograph they said was exclusive to my paper. It was then Governor Orji Uzor Kalu in a classroom among other students of Abia State University (ABSU). He was said to be sitting for an examination at the university. Even without the solicitation, I knew it was a remarkable photograph fit only for the front page because of its news value. However, after my guests had left, I spent considerable time examining the photograph and ruminating over its real essence. After a while, I concluded that I would be doing the readers a disservice if I just put the photograph on the front page without a few lines. Then I began to write what turned out to be one of my most memorable back-page columns. The pertinent questions I i...

Nigeria and Oil Ownership

Image
In Africa like the world over there is always more than meets the eye. The recent debate over the Nigerian Petroleum Industry Bill divided (PIB) the elite along the usual north-south lines. The major debacle was the request for another 10% to be given to the host communities of the Niger-Delta. Senators of all hues and stripes have taken different positions. What interests me today is the ownership of Nigerian oil mining leases (OML). Let Senator Enang talk about the rest.... Senator Ita Enang,  Chairman Senate Committee on Business and Rules The sparring between senators over the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) got messier Wednesday as Chairman, Senate Committee on Business and Rules, Ita Enang, accused northerners of reaping the benefits of indigenous crude oil exploration and production in the Niger Delta at the expense of indigenes of the area. At the resumption of debate on the bill, which has divided the senators along the fault line between the North and...

What is Your Talent?

Image
Hello everyone A quick disclaimer. This is not my work. The author is Pastor Chuck. “To one he gave five talents [of money], to another two talents and to another one talent, each according to his ability” - Matthew 25:15 NIV Seems that some people have all the great imagination, and the rest of us have to work hard at it. Oh, to be like that classic comedian Red Skelton. Or remember the Walt Disney animators — what creativity! One former Disney illustrator is using his talents for Christian videos (his name is Norm McGary). I have a friend — every thing he says seems to be witty. I asked him if he stays up nights thinking about clever sayings. No, he says, it just comes to him. Then there is another friend who at 12 years old played piano with the Buffalo , NY Philharmonic. Yet, she can play contemporary Christian music with the same ease as a Mozart or Beethoven piece. A young woman with a beautiful voice, crystal clear – what a gift. Perfect pitch! Add to all this, t...
